Hip and
Knee Pain

Hip and knee pain can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. The hips and knees are used daily in activities such as sitting, standing and walking. If hip or knee pain develops, these activities can become almost impossible to endure. Without the ability to sit, stand or walk comfortably, a person’s quality of life can drastically decline. If you are experiencing hip or knee pain, take a moment to read through the common causes of this pain and find out what treatment options are available to you.

Can I treat my own knee and hip pain?

There are certain actions that can be taken on your own to help deal with your hip or knee pain. Ice is a great way to reduce pain and swelling. Also, a knee brace can be worn to help stabilize the knee joint. It is important to note that a brace will not increase the strength of the muscles surrounding the joint. This could potentially make the patient reliant on the knee brace for stabilization.

What are the risk factors for hip and knee pain?

There can be a large genetic component when it comes to determining whether a patient may need hip or knee treatment. Pain in the knee or hip is often cause by the natural degeneration of the joint, which can cause inflammation and nerve compression. A pinched nerve can lead to chronic pain or sometimes to sporadic pain during certain movements. Also, athletes who are required to make a lot of lateral movements such as tennis, basketball and soccer players are more likely to tear a ligament in the knee. Other factors like muscle weakness or tightness, imbalance, and lifestyle can become a risk for developing chronic pain in the knee or hip joints.

Therapy treatment options for knee and hip pain

The most common courses of treatment for knee and hip pain are centered on physical therapy. Physical therapy can help to restore the strength and mobility within the damaged joint. In the case of surgery, physical therapy is often beneficial during post-op recovery to help gain movement in the hip or knee. The patients who diligently follow the strength and flexibility exercises after a complete joint replacement find that they recover quicker, retain a greater range of motion and regain a higher quality of life than patients who did not follow the rehab program as strictly or for those who did not participate in any meaningful rehab after their procedure. Hip and knee pain comes in many different forms. Regardless of whether you have arthritis, a torn ligament or are recovering from a complete joint replacement surgery, the expert physical therapists of Back in Motion Physical Therapy are here to help. If you suffer from hip or knee pain or are considering a joint replacement and need a facility in which to do the post-op rehab, Back in Motion Physical Therapy can assist! How PT can cut knee pain when squatting

How PT can cut knee pain when squatting

When you squat, specific muscles contract to help stabilize the knee joint. These muscles include the quadriceps and hamstrings. Whenever you have pain in the knee, this may be a sign of weakness in one or more of these muscle groups. Your pain may also be triggered...

Softball has always been a huge part of my life. It was one of the few outlets I had; a place to escape and forget about all of the stress and just play. When I injured my shoulder and was unable to throw a ball without being in excruciating pain, I was devastated. Fortunately though, I work for an amazing physical therapy company... Back in Motion! I'm not going to lie, I was a little hesitant to start PT because I was convinced that surgery was the only thing that would fix my shoulder. I trusted my coworker and PT, and began a treatment plan of physical therapy. When I started, I had very limited range of motion and barely any strength in my effected arm. At first, it was hard, it was frustrating at times, and it was a slow process. But once I started to see results I became more and more optimistic. My therapist was patient with me, reassured me that there was an end in sight, and constantly went above and beyond to make sure that I was able to make a full recovery. Weeks later, I tried throwing a softball again, and did so with NO PAIN. I cannot even describe the happiness and the smile that was on my face after that first throw! My goal was to be able to get back into playing competitively, and my therapist made sure that would happen for me. I recently just finished my softball season where my team competed in Nationals in Connecticut, and finished in 9th place out of 37 teams at the World Series tournament in Florida.I was able to avoid surgery AND get back to playing softball. I couldn't be happier!

"I had been dealing with pain in both elbows for over 2 years. I had surgery on my right elbow and did not want surgery for my left elbow because of how much downtime and recovery.I tried PT with another group and I had no results in over a year. After researching other facilities, I found Back in Motion. I learned that they offered dry-needling, and I thought to myself if that does not work then I will have no choice but to have surgery. After a few months at Back in Motion I no longer have any pain and I feel like a new man!"Read more

I broke my leg sliding into the base in baseball. I had to sit out of all the summer activities this summer and had to sit out of football too! I couldn't ride my skateboard or even run. The hardest part was not running though. Because of Back in Motion I can ride my skateboard and run, which is my favorite thing to do! My favorite part about coming to Back in Motion was making new friends!Read more

You may recognize Brendan from our PTA staff in South Portland! I am a 71 year-old woman who has had several health issues in the past year and needed therapy. Just before Thanksgiving I had a spinal release on my lower back. I started therapy 2 weeks after my surgery and I was released today. My recovery has been long and difficult. The therapists at the Dexter office have helped so much. About 3 weeks ago I was ready to give up, and they wouldn't let me! They provided me with a home program and with what I was doing at the office I have made a great recovery. They made me do the difficult things to bring about progress in my recovery. I have gained flexibility and strength that I thought was lost forever. As I get older, there are some limitations that I need to accept, however our bodies have the ability to heal. At the Dexter brand of Back in Motion, they encourage you to reach goals that you may think are impossible.Thank you to all who helped with my recovery. If you think things will not improve, take heart because my therapist can help you reach higher than you can imagine! Thank you ALL!Read more
